Packaging Management, Traceability and Control with RFID in the Energy IndustryTablette Panasonic

NEXESS was selected by EDF for the Nuclear Power Station site at Golfech to provide a solution for packaging management, traceability, and control using RFID technology. This system had to be suitable for the specific processes and constraints of nuclear production, market solutions being unsatisfactory.

The solution deployed on EDF’s Golfech site enables logistics and packaging control agents to carry out regulatory qualification of packaging, manage packing in storage areas, and closely monitor regulatory controls. As such, the user has an instant overview of all packaging movements (shipments and receipts) and locations, thanks to user-friendly, efficient and intuitive software, and appropriate mobile RFID (radio frequency identification) readers and tablets.

The EDF Golfech site handles approximately 200 packages subject to compliance with control and traceability directives on the transportation of dangerous goods and on nuclear installations, as well as internal directives on general operating regulations (formerly DI 109, DI 127 and DI 82). These directives and regulations require traceability of the regulatory checks carried out on each form of packaging, in order to ensure personal and environmental safety.

Automate Packaging Management and Control

“Ensuring packaging conformity and complying with regulations on the transportation of dangerous goods and on nuclear installations and directives DI 109, DI 127, and DI 82” is EDF Golfech’s primary objective, confirms Jean-Cyril Belloc, safety advisor for transporting hazardous items.

After all, inadequate packaging management (damaged containers, uncertain content, etc.) can have significant consequences in terms of logistics, particularly in the case of a unit shutdown. As a result, packaging must always be identified, located, and in perfect condition.

However, day-to-day management of packaging was previously carried out manually, using spreadsheet-type software to record the movements and location of packaging, monitor regulatory controls, etc.

This type of manual updating is often error-ridden and time-consuming, and there is no certainty that the information contained in the spreadsheet will be reliable and accurate. In seeking to adopt a management and traceability solution using RFID technology, EDF Golfech wanted to ensure permanent compliance in its packaging and storage areas, through real-time packaging inventory, automated monitoring of regulatory controls, planning and monitoring of handling operations, geolocation of packaging, logging of movements, etc. This solution aims to guarantee traceability and compliance of packaging materials during internal handling operations at the EDF Golfech nuclear power station, as well as in the context of shipping packaging to other nuclear plants.

“The NEXESS RFID packaging management solution makes day-to-day packaging management easier and safer (no data entry, no paperwork: no more human errors). The information is transmitted in real time to management, giving them an accurate and reliable overview, and ensuring better compliance with directives and regulations”

EDF Golfech has chosen the NEXESS NEXCAP® MAT solution to monitor its packaging materials with RFID technology. NEXESS has extensive experience in the traceability of sensitive equipment by means of RFID, across various industries: Nuclear, Petrochemicals, Aeronautics, etc.

• Real-time location updating during shipment or receipt of packaging

NEXCAP® Mobile Assets Tracking, a mobile solution for managing connected objects in industry

Adopting NEXCAP® MAT also gives you access to all NEXESS applications specifically developed for EDF’s nuclear fleet.

Each application is composed of dedicated functionalities designed around the connected object and its intended users: sending/receiving equipment from stock or to a remote site, performing controls on products subject to regulations, etc.

Operations carried out in the field are tracked and logged on the company’s server as well as on the NEXCAP® software platform. Inventories, control reports, operational planning, alert dashboard… All these functionalities and more are available with the NEXCAP® MAT solution.

An ideal RFID middleware solution, simultaneously enabling connection of RFID infrastructures (smart cabinets, smart counters, smart portals, etc.), mobile devices, or ERP-type software, the NEXCAP® platform is available in SAAS (Software As A Service) mode or hosted on the customer’s information system.
