Managing spare parts with RFID

In 2013, EDF CETAC launched a project to implement a solution for managing spare parts using RFID, in order to facilitate their inventory, improve their geolocation, and optimize their stocking.

Secure and improve the availability rate in thermal power plants

The main objective of this project was to secure and improve the availability rate in CETAC (combustion turbine) plants. To meet these needs, NEXESS installed the NEXCAP® RFID Mobile Assets Tracking application on the CETAC sites in order to manage spare parts by means of RFID.

In seeking to adopt a global traceability solution using RFID technology, the turbine plant wished to secure each spare part and ascertain its exact location at all times, so as not to impact the availability rate in the event of unplanned maintenance.

CETAC chose NEXESS’s NEXCAP® Mobile Assets Tracking tool to monitor its spare parts using RFID technology. NEXESS has extensive experience in the traceability of sensitive equipment by means of RFID, across various industries: Nuclear, Petrochemicals, Aeronautics, etc.

By accessing business functions on mobile readers, the NEXCAP® software suite allows storekeepers to easily track, on a user-friendly interface, all movements of spare parts: receipts (entry into stock), shipments (to a third-party company, a remote CETAC store), loans, returns, etc.

Using NEXESS mobile solutions (tablet and mobile RFID reader), storekeepers can quickly and remotely identify all data related to a spare part stored on a shelf, for example: manufacturer, reference number, date of manufacture, revision date, last movement, etc. They can also perform a specific search for a part or tool, and locate it in an instant: storage location, available quantity, etc.

All traceability data, real-time inventories, and movement histories are then available remotely via the NEXCAP® web application.

This application can be used to manage tracked equipment, users, and associated employee profiles (operator, storekeeper, administrator, etc.). The NEXCAP® architecture also supports connection to SAP® software, already deployed at EDF CETAC for the management of procurement flows (purchases, receipts) and accounting flows.

This connection makes it possible to integrate existing equipment databases from SAP® to NEXCAP® and adds a real-time traceability component to the platform, thanks to RFID technology. The accounting inventory and actual field inventory are now brought together.

Award-winning innovative RFID application

In 2013, NEXESS won the RFID Award for best deployment of a RFID solution in industry, thanks to its RFID-based spare parts management application (see article).

This solution was also covered by an article in RFID Journal, available via this link: Managing spare parts with RFID, RFID Journal article.
