Management of Extinguishers and SCBA equipment with RFID: Case Study EDF Tricastin

In 2009, EDF Tricastin launches a project for the setting up of fire equipment management solution by RFID to facilitate the inventory, improve and optimize the traceability of regulatory inspections.

Management of Extinguishers and SCBA equipment

Automate the Management and Control of Fire Equipment with RFID

The main objective of EDF Tricastin is to improve the traceability and guarantee the maintenance of fire equipment.

Indeed, a poor management of fire equipment (equipment missing, defective or expiration dates exceeded) may have important consequences in case of incident. Therefore, fire equipment should always be available, in a perfect operating condition at all times.

However, the daily management of fire equipment is made manually through spreadsheet files to determine the level of the different stocks, the location of equipment, monitoring of regulatory controls, etc. This manual update, usually source of errors and time consuming, do not allow to guarantee the reliability and  the accuracy of the information contained in this spreadsheet.

Seeking for a management and traceability solution using RFID technology, EDF Tricastin wants to guarantee and ensure the condition of fire equipment at any time : real-time inventory, automatic tracking of regulatory controls, geolocation of equipment, etc. This solution aims to ensure the availability and the proper functioning of equipment in case of incident.

EDF Tricastin chose NexCap® Mobile Assets Tracking solution by Nexess, to carry out the monitoring of its fire equipment (extinguishers, SCBA) with RFID. Nexess has an extensive experience of the traceability of sensitive material with RFID in many industries : Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Aerospace, etc.

Management of Extinguishers and SCBA equipment

Fire managers can also perform regulatory controls of maintenance (annual control, qualification) and random controls (visual inspection).

Equipped with RFID mobile reader, they can for example, control the status of each extinguisher, its location and compliance.
Information entered on the RFID PDA allow to update automatically and instantly the material properties of each extinguisher. Moreover, in case of non-compliance (extinguisher damaged, pin missing, etc.), technicians have the opportunity to take picture of damaged equipment and save it.

All data of movements traceability, controls, inventories and loggings are then remotely available with the NexCap® Web application.

Management of Spare Parts with RFID : Case Study EDF CETAC

In 2013, EDF CETAC launches a project for the setting up of a spare parts management solution by RFID to facilitate the inventory, improve the geolocation and optimize their stocks.

EDF CETAC

Improve Installations Availability thanks to RFID Technology

The main objective of this project is to ensure and improve the availability rate of CETAC power station. To answer these needs, Nexess has deployed on CETAC sites the RFID application NexCap® Mobile Assets Tracking for the management of Spare Parts.

Seeking for a traceability solution using RFID technology, CETAC wants to guarantee and ensure the exact location of each spare part, at any time, to not impact the availability rate of the power station in case of unplanned maintenance.

CETAC chose NexCap® Mobile Assets Tracking solution by Nexess, to carry out the monitoring of its spare parts with RFID. Nexess has an extensive experience of the traceability of sensitive material with RFID in many industries : Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Aerospace, etc.

Getting to business functions on the mobile readers, NexCap® Software Platform allows storekeepers to easily trace every spare parts movements through a friendly interface : receiving (going in stock), sending (to a company or a distant CETAC’s warehouse), borrowings, returns, etc.

Thanks to the RFID reader embedded in the PDA, storekeepers can quickly identify remotely and without vis-à-vis, all data related to a spare part stored in a shelf, for example : manufacturer, part number, date of manufacture, date of revision, last movement, etc. They can also perform specific research of spare parts or tools and locate them in an instant : storage location, quantity available, etc.

All traceability data, real-time inventories and movements loggings are remotely available through NexCap® Web application.

This application allows the administration of materials to trace users and “business” profiles (operator, storekeeper, administrator, etc.). The architecture of NexCap® allows the connection to SAP software, already deployed at EDF CETAC to manage supply flows (purchases, receipt) and accounting flows.

This connection allows to integrate existing material databases from SAP® toward NexCap® and adds a real-time traceability part to the platform thanks to the RFID technology. The accounting inventory and the real inventory from the field are now on the same level.

An innovative solution rewarded by an RFID Awards 2013

During the RFID Congress 2013, NexCap® Mobile Assets Tracking solution has been rewarded by an “RFID Awards” for the best deployment of an RFID / NFC solution in the Industry thanks to the application of spare parts tracking. (See Article)

This solution is also the subject of an article in RFID Journal via this link : Management of spare parts by RFID, RFID Journal Article.

Since April 2013, Brennelis and Champagne sur Oise CETAC sites use daily NexCap® RFID Mobile Assets Tracking solution, developped by Nexess, to manage and locate fastly its spare parts.

RFID Awards 2013

Sophia-Antipolis – November 7th, 2013 –  CETAC, a subsidiary of EDF, has thirteen combustion turbines spread over six production sites in France. Flexible and responsive, able to start in 30 minutes, combustion turbines operate hundred hours per year to satisfy peaks of electricity consumption, thus contributing to the security of electricity supply of the French territory. System availability requires real-time visibility to can have fastly the spare parts at the right place, at the right moment.

Improvement of the visibility and availability of stocks to gain of time and efficiency

CETAC called on Nexess, RFID expert in industrial environments, to develop and install RFID solution for the stock tracking and management of spare parts and tools. “Ensuring traceability of stocks movements made and facilitating inventories, NexCap® MAT solution used by CETAC radically reduces the steps of manual update and the real-time monitoring of flows, says Eric Tra-Bi, CETAC stock manager. The location and the knowledge of spare parts availability is instantaneous, ensuring CETAC’s reactivity without a hitch in case of failure or maintenance.”
